The kids are back in school! It’s never easy to get everyone up, dressed, and out the door – with a full belly! Here are some quick healthy breakfast ideas for kids that won’t leave stomachs growling by 9am.

1. Leftovers

Check out our post on why we love having leftovers for breakfast!

2. Greek yogurt

Start with plain Greek yogurt and add your own fresh or frozen berries, a little honey or maple syrup, and maybe some cereal for a little crunch. We also like Siggi’s 4% whole milk yogurt, which is high in protein and has great flavors your kids will love.

3. Higher-protein cereal

Many single-grain, high-sugar cereals offer little nutritionally. They’re mostly just carbohydrates, and are likely to leave kids hungry an hour later. Look for cereals that contain some protein and fiber to fill you up. We like:

  • Barbara’s Morning Oat Crunch (5g fiber and 6g protein per 1 cup)
  • Kashi GOLEAN Cinnamon Crisp (9g fiber and 11g protein per 3/4 cup)
  • Kashi GOLEAN Vanilla Pepita Clusters (6g fiber and 9g protein per 1 cup)

4. Overnight oats

Search online for recipes for this trending cold breakfast. In a glass jar, mix old-fashioned oats, Greek yogurt, milk (dairy or non-dairy), and fruit. Leave it in the fridge overnight. It sounds strange, but we can’t get enough – and kids love eating breakfast out of a jar!

5. Slow cooker steel-cut oats

Not a morning person? Let your slow cooker make oatmeal while you sleep. The next morning, leave out toppings like bananas, frozen blueberries, apples and cinnamon, slivered almonds, or walnuts. Then kids can create their own bowl!

6. Whole grain English muffin

Pair with nut butter and a piece of fruit.

7. Weekend breakfast leftovers

Freeze some whole grain pancakes or waffles from your Sunday breakfast. Quickly warm them up in the toaster for a quick school-morning treat. Add a hard-boiled egg on the side for an extra kick of protein.

8. Cheese and whole-grain crackers with a side of fruit

Grapes, cantaloupe, or berries work well! Unconventional, but it’s got a whole grain, protein, and some fruit – just what you want to stay satisfied.
